EMAÒ - Titration gives
dental and healthcare professionals the ability to advance a mandible in 3-mm
increments in order to establish candidacy for long-term treatment of
obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or snoring with a custom oral appliance. EMAÒ
- Titration will not only show which patients respond to mandibular advancement,
but the optimum amount of advancement needed.
When being used as a diagnostic tool for treatment of OSA, The
EMAÒ - Titration Thermoplastic Material
appliance can be fitted immediately prior to a polysomnogram or in a dental
office. EMAÒ - Titration is placed in the
patient’s mouth at the beginning of the polysomnogram. The patient’s mandible
may be advanced in 3-mm increments throughout the test until maximum mandibular
protrusion is achieved. If apneic events cease at any given point, the
protrusion measurement will be noted and used to fit and optimize treatment of a
custom oral appliance. If maximum protrusion of the mandible is achieved without
cessation of apneic events, oral appliance therapy alone will not be successful.
When the intended goal is simply to eliminate (or substantially alleviate)
snoring, the appliance’s limited lifetime of 4-6 weeks affords the snoring
patient the opportunity to experiment at home with varying degrees of titration
necessary to achieve this goal. In either setting the patient can wear the
thermoplastic appliance until a long-term custom appliance can be fabricated.
